If you’re 18 and older and meet all requirements for taking the road skills test, you’ll need to go the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to take the road skills test. You’ll need to have passed a written exam about driving on the roads before taking the Road Skills Test. If you fail the Road Skills Test 3 times you’ll be required to complete an adult in-vehicle recertification course before taking the test a fourth time. This course consists of 14 one-hour behind-the-wheel instructions before taking.
In addition for first time drivers 18 years and older, you must have passed an approved driver education course or held a Virginia learner’s permit at least 60 days prior to taking the DMV road skills test. Those 18 years and older who have not completed an approved course of driver's education must present a driving maneuvers checklist (In-Car Maneuvers Observation Record - CMSA 19 form) prior to beginning a DMV-administered road skills test. Adults, 18 years and older, have the option to complete a 36 hour driver education course and behind-the-wheel lessons program consisting of 14 periods of in-car instruction (7 fifty-minute sessions of behind-the-wheel instruction and 7 fifty-minute sessions of observing an adult student drive), including final road skills test with an approved commercial driving school.
If you’re under 18, the road skills test is given by a driving school. To pass the road skills test, you must successfully complete 40 or more of 50 driving maneuvers.
